Although Clifford Brown and Max Roach's joint quintet had a relatively short lifespan, the importance of this ensemble for the further development of jazz cannot be overestimated. Within the approximately one and a half years that it existed, it initiated the transition from bebop to hard bop. When the quintet made its first recording sessions in the studio in August 1954, the definitive line-up had been found with tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianist Richie Powell, and bassist George Morrow, with whom they recorded several groundbreaking albums. "Study In Brown" was recorded in New York in February 1955 and consisted – with the exception of the standards "Cherokee," "If I Love Again," and "Take The A Train" – of original compositions by Brown, Land, and Powell, some of which, such as "Sandu" and "Land's End," became standards in their own right.

VERVE ACOUSTIC SOUNDS SERIES: mastered fully analogue from the original tapes by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound, QPR pressing (180 g), firm tip-on gatefold (Stoughton Printing), padded inner sleeve.
