Throughout his career, pianist Bill Evans played in a number of high-caliber trios. But the crown undoubtedly went to the one with bassist Scott LaFaro, who died far too young, and drummer Paul Motian. In just a year and a half, the musicians, who played on an almost equal footing, revolutionized the concept of the piano trio in jazz on four albums for Riverside. Evans was in similar top form in 1964 on his first trio album for Verve Records. He was once again inspired by his old companion Paul Motian and the up-and-coming bassist Gary Peacock. The dreamlike, intuitive interplay of these three masters of improvisation still captivates listeners today from the first note to the last.
