During the first ten years of her solo career, Sarah Vaughan rarely had the opportunity to demonstrate her phenomenal vocal talent in a true jazz context when recording for the Musicraft and Columbia labels, as the repertoire consisted mainly of commercial pop ballads. That changed abruptly when she signed a new contract with Mercury and its sublabel EmArcy in 1954. Her very first recording with the young trumpeter Clifford Brown was to become an absolute classic. In addition to Brown, tenor saxophonist Paul Quinichette, flutist Herbie Mann, and pianist Jimmy Jones Jr., who led an excellent rhythm section with bassist Joe Benjamin and drummer Roy Haynes, also provided solo accents. The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.

VERVE ACOUSTIC SOUNDS SERIES: mastered fully analogue from the original tapes by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound, QPR pressing (180 g), firm tip-on gatefold (Stoughton Printing), padded inner sleeve.
