On “Live Dispatch Vol. 1: Blues For Allah ’26”, Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble reimagine the music of the Grateful Dead through Detroit soul, jazz, groove and a spirit of fearless improvisation. Bassist, six-time Grammy winner, acclaimed producer and longtime president of Blue Note Records Don Was has been performing alongside Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir since 2018 in the band Wolf Bros. Formed in California in 1965, the Grateful Dead blended rock, folk, jazz and psychedelic experimentation into an unmistakable musical language, with free-flowing interplay at the heart of their live performances. “Live Dispatch Vol. 1” picks up that spirit across six live recordings, including “The Music Never Stopped”, “Crazy Fingers” and “Blues For Allah”, as the Pan-Detroit Ensemble carries the band’s adventurous legacy forward with a distinctive sound and the musical energy of Detroit.
