With "If Ever You Would Leave Us (we play for Rollins)", saxophonist Joshua Redman pays tribute to his greatest musical inspiration, Sonny Rollins. Conceived immediately after Rollins’ passing, the album features eleven selections from his repertoire alongside an all-star cast including Christian McBride, Larry Grenadier, Marcus Gilmore, Kevin Hays, Peter Bernstein, Chris Potter, Cécile McLorin Salvant and Gabrielle Cavassa. From solo and duo performances to Rollins-inspired pianoless trios and larger ensembles, Redman approaches classics such as "Doxy", "Blue Seven", "God Bless The Child" and "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise" with both reverence and a deeply personal touch. Less a requiem than a celebration filled with joy and gratitude, the album is a heartfelt homage to the "Saxophone Colossus" whom Redman calls his greatest influence.
