The legendary BRITISH JAZZ EXPLOSION series, much celebrated by jazz fans, continues with another cult classic of British jazz. It has been mastered at Abbey Road Studios from the original stereo analogue tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl. Also included is a four-page fold-out insert featuring images and a new essay by jazz expert and series producer Tony Higgins. "High Spirits" reveals a different but no less fascinating side of Jamaican-British alto saxophonist Joe Harriott, one of the great original voices of British jazz. Following his groundbreaking free-form experiments, Harriott turned here to eight songs from the musical of same name by Hugh Martin and Timothy Gray. The arrangements are by pianist Pat Smythe, who would also play a key role in Harriott's pioneering Indo-Jazz projects. With Shake Keane on trumpet and flugelhorn, Coleridge Goode on bass and Bobby Orr on drums, Harriott's classic quintet is heard in superb form. Recorded in September 1964 and released in 1965 as part of the Denis Preston-supervised Lansdowne Series, the album combines melodic accessibility with assured post-bop and brilliant improvisation. A long-underappreciated gem of British jazz.
